The Basics of what you need to know.
A very informative article for
the non-experts among us. Leaving a network exposed with little or no
firewall protection can burn your organization with stolen or destroyed
data, or a shut down of critical operations.

Is a virus threat real?
Many well-intentioned people pass e-mail warnings
about potential computer viruses. Check the following site before sending
false warnings:
Virus Myths Page - http://www.vmyths.com/
What information should
include when I notify people that I may have sent them a virus?
1. First and foremost- CLEAN your system and
take the necessary steps to prevent re-infection.
2. Include the name of the virus that you were
infected with and include a link from an online virus database (http://vil.nai.com/VIL/default.asp)
that gives a full description of virus characteristics and cleaning
procedure.
Here's an example of a well written virus
notification:
Dear Tom,
Yesterday, my system was infected with
W32/Goner@MM virus. You may have received this virus from
me in an e-mail message. Please understand that my company takes
virus protection seriously and we have taken steps to prevent this from
happening in the future.
Full details of the virus including how to remove it
from your system can be found at the following link:
http://vil.nai.com/vil/virusSummary.asp?virus_k=99272
I'm sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.
IT'S IMPORTANT TO SEND AS MUCH DETAILED INFORMATION
ABOUT THE VIRUS AS POSSIBLE TO ASSIST THE RECIPIENT IN DEALING WITH THE
POTENTIAL PROBLEM. SENDING A VAGUE OR INCOMPLETE MESSAGE ISN'T
ENOUGH.

What is CERT?
The Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a federally funded
research and development center operated by Carnegie Mellon University.
They study Internet security vulnerabilities, handle computer security
incidents, publish security alerts, research long-term changes in
networked systems, and develop information and training to help you
improve security at your site.
There are many great resources available on
www.cert.org and it's a great place to
start your search for information on Internet Security.
