Although media coverage concerning security for Information Technology (IT) systems is extensive, little has been said about the information security issues and needs of factory information systems (FIS). The primary reason for this is that FIS are historically viewed as isolated from IT systems both physically and logically, and constructed on data that exists only in proprietary formats. FIS are therefore viewed as enjoying “security by obscurity”. Well, that’s no longer true and the security implications are formidable. This seminar will explore the issues, threats, vulnerabilities and potential solutions for issues and needs of Factory Information Systems.

Wireless sensors are rapidly gaining acceptance in industrial applications. One very important reason for that acceptance is that wireless sensors dramatically reduce the system cost of installing retrofit sensors for applications such as e-diagnostics. A second reason for acceptance is the mobility offered by wireless in applications such as RFID for product tracking and ID cards. However, industrial wireless applications raise new issues related to interference and security which must be understood and addressed. This seminar will explore the issues, threats, and vulnerabilities, current and near term solutions for the advanced industrial wireless applications.
